Founded in 1988 with Headquarters in Berne, Switzerland, Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Suisse (VSF-Suisse), www.vsf-suisse.org, is a not for profit organisation focusing on alleviating suffering, disease and hunger, supporting socio-economic development and assisting people whose livelihoods mainly depend on livestock and agriculture, with the aim of improving food sovereignty, nutrition security and resilience.


VSF-Suisse seeks to fill the following positions immediately for its program in Gedo, Somalia.  The positions will initially be for the specified period as below, but renewable depending on availability of new donor funding.  Remuneration is based on VSF-Suisse rates for the respective positions.

Food Security and Nutrition Officer
Duration: 6 Months

 

Under the supervision of the Project Manager, the position holder will:

  • Provide technical leadership during the implementation of VSF-Suisse food security and nutrition interventions in the assigned geographical area, based on the activity logframe and approved workplans;
  • Prepare technical specification for the inputs to be purchased under the project, in consultation with regional and district technical officers;
  • Supervise the distribution of inputs, and monitor implementation of field activities by the service providers contracted by FAO;
  • Carry out project monitoring impact assessment;
  • Facilitate community mobilization and sensitization on the project, and document the outcomes;
  • Facilitate training sessions, and document outcomes through written reports;
  • Prepare and timely submit high quality reports according to donor requirements;
  • Represent VSF-Suisse in the Food Security and Nutrition Sectors Meetings;
  • Prepare and submit project imprest requests and periodic field work plans based on the project logframe, and budget to the supervisor for processing;
  • Organize periodic team planning meetings, and share information on daily and weekly progress on project implementation;
  • Manage the field base location in the absence of the Base Coordinator, and be responsible for the preparation of monthly field base assets inventory for submission to the supervisor;
  • Liaison with community leaders, local government officials, NGOs, UN-bodies and other partners wherever appropriate and required;
  • Maintain daily communication with the Base Coordinator on all issues relating to weather, security, project activities, staff movements and welfare issues.

Qualifications, Experience & Skills required:

  • University degree in food security, nutrition or related fields. A Post-graduate training in the same field would be desirable;
  • At least five years’ experience in agriculture, food security, nutrition, as a field practitioner in a pastoral/agro-pastoral setting with direct involvement in nutrition-sensitive agriculture;
  • Experience in carrying out assessments, baseline surveys, monitoring, and community participatory evaluation exercises of food security and nutrition projects;
  • Demonstration of ability to manage projects and resources efficiently and in a timely manner;
  • Excellent communication skills, including ability to write proposals, documents and technical reports;
  • Excellent computer skills and demonstrable track record of managing a successful team;
  • Ability to work in a multicultural team, and strict adherence to rules, regulations and guidelines;
  • Good facilitation skills, and ability to conduct community level workshops/seminars;
  • Fluent in written and spoken English;
  • Ability to communicate in Somali is an added advantage.


Hydrologist/Water Engineer
Duration: 12 Months

 

Under the supervision of the Project Manager, the position holder will:

  • Provide technical leadership for the implementation of VSF-Suisse water and sanitation programs;
  • Plan, design, implement and follow-up of water projects in line with beneficiary needs and overall program projects;
  • Facilitate community mobilization and sensitization on the project, and document the outcomes;
  • Carry out community needs assessments, which include problem identification, analysis, prioritization as well as solution identification;
  • Facilitate training sessions, and document outcomes through written reports;
  • Carry out project monitoring impact assessment;
  • Ensure timely and accurate reporting on water and sanitation programs according to VSF-Suisse and donor requirements;
  • Represent VSF-Suisse in the WASH Sector Meetings;
  • Prepare and submit project imprest requests and periodic field work plans based on the project logframe, and budget to the supervisor for processing;
  • Prepare annual detailed implementation plans for the program with the project team, and ensure achievement of agreed targets;
  • Establish new community water management structures, and strengthen the capacity of existing committees;
  • Supervise and ensure, that all water and sanitation project staff are fulfilling their assigned roles;
  • Liaise with community leaders, local government officials, NGOs, UN-bodies and other partners wherever appropriate and required;
  • Maintain daily communication with the Base Coordinator on all issues relating to weather, security, project activities, staff movements and welfare issues

Qualifications, Experience & Skills required:

  • University degree/Diploma in Water Resources Engineering, Agricultural Engineering, Geology, Integrated Water Resources Management, Hydrology, or related field;
  • Minimum 3 years’ work experience in implementing projects in water and sanitation;
  • Hands-on experience in water quality analysis and chlorination with the required amount of chlorine to attain the required FRC at fetching point;
  • Proven experience of handling water treatment chemicals and apparatus like pool tester;
  • Experience in carrying out assessments, baseline surveys, monitoring, and community participatory evaluation exercises;
  • Experience in the implementation of Rural Development Projects;
  • Demonstration of ability to manage projects and resources efficiently and in a timely manner;
  • Excellent communication skills, including ability to write proposals, documents and technical reports;
  • Ability to work in a multicultural team, and strict adherence to rules, regulations and guidelines;
  • Good facilitation skills, and ability to conduct community level workshops/seminars;
  • Excellent computer skills, and demonstrable track record of managing a successful team;
  • Fluent in written and spoken English;
  • Ability to communicate in Somali is an added advantage.


Field Veterinarian
Duration: 12 Months

 

Key Responsibilities: under the supervision of the Project Manager, the position holder will:

  • Oversee the implementation of the project activities, based on the activity logframe and approved work plans;
  • Carry out training needs assessments, and undertake trainings for livestock value chain actors on animal health and production;
  • Facilitate and coordinate all animal and public health services activities;
  • Facilitate community dialogue meetings for project awareness creation and general community sensitization, and document the outcomes;
  • Facilitate all training sessions, and document the outcomes through written reports;
  • Collect information on diseases including outbreaks, and monitor local disease situation;
  • Prepare and timely submit high-quality project progress reports according to donor requirements;
  • Represent VSF-Suisse in the livestock sector/food security meetings;
  • Prepare and submit project imprest requests and periodic field work plans, based on the project logframe and budgets, to the supervisor for processing;
  • Organize periodic team planning meetings, and share information on daily and weekly progress on project implementation;
  • Liaise with community leaders, local government officials, NGOs, UN-bodies and other partners wherever appropriate and required;
  • Maintain daily communications with the country office on all issues relating to weather, security, project activities, staff movement and welfare issues.

Qualifications, Experience & Skills required:

  • Degree in Veterinary Medicine/Animal Health Science;
  • At least 3 years’ working experience in veterinary programmes or in animal and veterinary public health projects as a field veterinarian;
  • Experience in carrying out assessments, baseline surveys, monitoring, and community participatory evaluation exercises;
  • Experience in gender sensitive participatory approaches in community development work;
  • Excellent organizational, managerial and report writing skills;
  • Excellent communication skills, interpersonal relations, and conflict resolution abilities; 
  • Excellent computer skills, and demonstrable track record of managing a successful team;
  • Ability to work in a multicultural team, and strict adherence to rules, regulations and guidelines;
  • Knowledge and experience of working with agro-pastoral communities will be an added advantage.

Field Officer
Duration: 12 Months

 

In consultation with the immediate Supervisor, the position holder is responsible for implementation of VSF-Suisse Project(s) activities:

  • Identify, select and verify project sites and beneficiaries for project implementation;
  • Mobilize and create community awareness for project implementation as per selected project site(s);
  • Facilitate community meetings, dialogues and formation of community focal point or community committees;
  • Liaise with immediate supervisor in facilitating field logistics arrangements;
  • Translate in local language during community meetings, dialogues and other community sessions;
  • Carry out surveys for baseline and end-line in close collaboration with immediate supervisor;
  • Under the guidance of the immediate supervisor, carry out monitoring and supervisory functions of the project(s) on a periodic basis;
  • Provide chronological activity reports of the project;
  • Represent VSF-Suisse in forums and meetings as instructed by the immediate supervisor;
  • Maintain daily communication with the Base Coordinator on security risks/threats, and advise the immediate supervisor on the next course of action.

Qualifications, Experience & Skills required:

  • Diploma in Animal Health and Production/Agriculture/Natural Resources Management;
  • A Certificate in Business Administration or Logistics/Procurement Supplies will be an added advantage;
  • At least 3 years’ NGO work experience, working in agro-pastoral communities;
  • Excellent communication skills, both orally and in writing, and excellent interpersonal relations and conflict resolution abilities;
  • Excellent computer skills, and demonstrable track record of managing a successful team;
  • Ability to work in a multicultural team, and strict adherence to rules, regulations and guidelines;
  • Experience in carrying out assessments, baseline surveys, monitoring, and community participatory evaluation exercises;
  • Experience in the implementation of Rural Development Projects;

Field Assistants - 3 Posts
Duration: 12 Months

 

In consultation with the immediate supervisor, the Field Assistant is responsible for implementation of VSF-Suisse project(s) activities in Gedo:

  • Application of technical expertise in delivering the objective of the project(s);
  • Identify community needs as per project activities;
  • Implement appropriate activities as per the approved work plan;
  • Closely monitor and record: progress made; challenges encountered during the distribution of water for humans, and water or fodder for livestock; meat and cash transfers; agricultural and livestock inputs;
  • Sensitize and mobilize community and local authorities for project implementation;
  • Submit project implementation reports to the immediate supervisor in a timely manner;
  • Maintain good working relations with beneficiaries, communities, local authorities and NGO’s representatives when discharging his/her assigned duties;
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the immediate supervisor;


Qualifications, Experience & Skills required:

  • Certificate in veterinary medicine/livestock production/agriculture/natural resource management/social science/agribusiness/business development/information management with at least three years’ NGO work experience, preferably in an agro-pastoral setting;
  • Must be a team player;
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills;
  • Outstanding communication both orally and in writing.
