A team assembled from the Animal Health department of the Adadle Woreda Pastoralist Development Office of Somali region of Ethiopia, consisting of 14 animal health experts and 10 Community Animal Health Workers (CAHWs), participated in a vaccination campaign funded by VSF-Suisse through Swiss Solidarity. In the Adadle Woreda, a total of 215,607 livestock were vaccinated against Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) and Sheep and Goat Pox (SGP), including 69,435 cattle, 67,429 sheep, and 78,743 goats. This effort benefitted 4,163 households in the year 2024.
Lumpy Skin Disease is a viral infection affecting cattle spread by insects, causing skin lesions, reduced milk production, fertility issues and abortions.
Although it does not affect humans, Sheep and Goat Pox is a highly contagious viral disease affecting small ruminants, characterized by widespread skin lesions.
The vaccination activities took place in 12 different kebeles in the Woreda, namely Jerey, Qudhaley, Bacadley, Liban, Qaqley 1 & 2, Wardid, Dabafayd, Hididole, Bohohagare, Haruf, Qorahada, and Anno-madahale. Concurrently, animal health interventions based on vouchers were provided to vulnerable households in these kebeles to protect their livestock from infectious diseases and internal/external parasites. Community animal health workers played a crucial role in delivering these interventions.
Active in East and West Africa, VSF-Suisse, is committed to training CAWHs to provide basic animal health and husbandry services in remote rural areas, enhancing community resilience, livelihoods and ensuring food security.
