On October 16th, we celebrate World Food Day, a global call to action for a world free from hunger and malnutrition. Despite progress in many areas, over 700 million people still face food insecurity — a stark reminder of the urgent need for sustainable and equitable food systems.
Together with Sufosec Alliance – the Swiss Alliance for Sustainable Food Worldwide – we are engaged to strengthen local food systems, improve nutrition, and empower communities to make the right to food a reality for everyone. Our joint efforts show that change is possible when local knowledge, sustainable practices, and global solidarity come together.
To raise awareness on food security, the Sufosec Alliance and Agroecology Works collaborated with Time Maze — designers of escape rooms — to create a game focused on solving the global hunger crisis. A mobile escape-room container was first set up in the heart of Bern, where politicians, experts, representatives of the Alliance and invited guests competed in teams to solve a series of puzzles revolving around food systems, agriculture, climate, trade and nutrition.
To mark World Food Day, the Sufosec Alliance, in collaboration with partner organisations, presented the gameshow Escape Hunger (German only) on 9 October 2025 on Bern’s Federal Square.
Moderated by Slam-Poet Kilian Ziegler, the event highlighted the complex, interconnected causes of hunger. By gamifying the challenge, Escape Hunger made the issues tangible: players and spectators alike experienced how political choices, agricultural practices, climate pressures, market access and inequality shape the possibilities — and barriers — for food security.
This «kick-off» in Bern was just the beginning — the Escape Hunger container toured from Bern to Basel and will now tour in others Swiss cities, inviting the public to take part and learn. This is how the tour continues:
