Background
The pastoralist regions of Ethiopia are generally marked by significant climatic variability, frequent droughts, and resource-based conflicts. Low literacy, poor infrastructure, limited private sector involvement, and lack of support all weaken livelihoods. Additionally, the absence of advanced technologies for production and value addition lowers resilience. Millions of people consequently endure severe poverty. Managing climate fluctuations is central to the sustainable management of rangelands, livestock, and agricultural livelihoods.
Goal
The goal is to build opportunities for livelihoods development and enhanced resilience for the community and especially for women.
Specific objectives are as follows:
People experience improved livelihoods and resilience including climatic adaptation.
Community and women’s priorities are addressed by the relevant duty bearer.
Lives are saved and livelihoods protected in crisis situations and crisis affected people can recover.
Approach
The programme contributes to improving the limited delivery of basic public services. The aim is to support livelihoods diversification, strengthen market linkages, and improve access to financial services. These efforts are also made to better anticipate and respond to possible humanitarian shocks. The project specifically supports women in managing resources, starting businesses, and actively participating in decision-making at both household and community levels.
