Background

The arid and semi-arid areas of the Horn of Africa Region, including Ethiopia and Kenya, are prone to natural disasters such as prolonged droughts and flooding. They are also affected by conflicts and the depletion of natural resources. Due to high population growth and a constant influx of refugees and internally displaced persons, there is an increased pressure on natural resources leading to environmental degradation and deforestation, and increased competition for their use.

This has immense impacts on the lives and livelihoods of (agro-) pastoralists, exhausting their coping mechanisms and resilience leading to massive displacements and increasing numbers of pastoralists abandoning their traditional livelihoods for alternative, often lower-status and less profitable, income sources.

Goal

The overall objective is to enhance protection and reduce the impacts of climate change as well as strengthen resilience and social coherence among vulnerable groups, such as displaced populations and host communities, including preventing further displacement due to climate change.

Specific outcomes:

  1. Communities are enabled to enhance their resilience towards climate shocks and tensions related to resource degradation through access to improved conflict-sensitive holistic natural resource management.
  2. Internally Displaced Persons and host community households affected by climate change build adaptive and transformative capacities enabling them to strengthen and diversify their livelihood.
  3. Local government and communities are empowered to prevent and respond to disasters and strengthen social cohesion.

    Approach

The project focuses on women and youth. The nexus approach focuses on strengthening the resilience of communities, including through managing natural resources in a socially coherent way to mitigate the risks of increased conflict, while creating a strong foundation for anticipatory action against future shocks.
