Background
The population of northern Togo faces a range of complex challenges, including security threats that have led to civilian casualties and displacement, political instability, and inadequate basic and economic infrastructure. These issues are further intensified by the impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss. Women and children are particularly vulnerable in this context.
Agriculture remains the primary livelihood activity and is vital to the survival of local communities. Livestock farming including poultry, cattle, and small ruminants also plays a significant socioeconomic role, contributing to income-generating opportunities.
Goal
There is a pressing need to address the humanitarian needs of the population—such as livelihoods, health, hygiene, and nutrition—while also promoting socio-economic integration. Thus, the main goal of the project is to strengthen the resilience and socio-economic development in improving living conditions and food security of vulnerable households in the northern regions of Togo.
Approach
The inclusive and participatory approaches integrate climate-smart solutions and local community involvement to effectively address the identified needs, foster sustainable transformation and long-term stabilisation.
The FRSD project offers quick solutions to ease the burden of crises. It focuses on implementing fast-acting, meaningful, and sustainable measures considering economic, social, and ecological dimensions. The interventions contribute to skills development in market access, agri-food processing, and preservation. Women and young people participate in training sessions about the construction of climate-smart small infrastructure for nature preservation. Moreover, trainees support the development of local communities through cash-for-work initiatives, providing short-term jobs on public projects for those most affected by crises.
