On 15 October, Scientific Reports, a journal in the Nature Portfolio, published a study based on data collected through the Alliance Sufosec’s household surveys.

The findinds make a strong case for agroecology

The findings show associations between the practice of agroecology and reduced food insecurity: between 2021 and 2024, food insecurity fell in 22 of the 32 projects monitored.

Among households that had applied at least three groups of agroecological practices, such as the partial application of organic fertilisers or the production and use of seeds adapted to local conditions, the risk of moderate food insecurity was 27% lower and the risk of severe food insecurity 35% lower.

Knowledge generated in the field, analysed scientifically andpublished for others to build on

The survey is carried out every year by Sufosec member organisations and their partners, as an integral part of the projects themselves. Independent experts reviewed how the data were collected and analysed before the journal accepted the study. This shows that collaborative monitoring meets scientific standards.

For Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Suisse, this publication is a recognition of the research and monitoring work carried out by our teams and partners. We're particularly proud that Douglas Machuchu, Project Officer at VSF-Suisse Kenya, is among the study's co-authors. Together with Justus Namatsi and the Kenya team, he has contributed to research that is now part of the international scientific debate.
