Building Opportunities for Livelihoods Development and Enhanced Resilience in three Ethiopian districts

Project overview
Background
Ethiopia’s nomadic regions are severely affected by climate change, droughts, and conflicts over natural resources. A lack of infrastructure, limited access to markets and financial services, and few opportunities for education and income make it difficult for many communities to build stable livelihoods.
Women, in particular, are often affected by economic insecurity and a lack of voice.
Objective
The project strengthens the resilience of nomadic communities to climate crises and sustainably improves their livelihoods. A particular focus is on the economic and social empowerment of women.
Approach
VSF-Suisse supports communities in diversifying their income sources, expanding market connections, and improving access to financial services. At the same time, the project strengthens local structures to better respond to crises and climate-related shocks.
Women receive targeted support to manage resources, establish businesses, and actively participate in decision-making at the household and community levels. This creates long-term prospects for more resilient communities.
