Food Security and Disease Prevention for the Population in Togo

The SAFE project improves the health, nutrition, and income of families who rely on livestock farming and animal products for their livelihoods. Through training, the expansion of veterinary services, and the strengthening of local structures, we improve animal health, food safety, and long-term prospects.

Food Security and Disease Prevention for the Population in Togo

Project overview

Background

Livestock farming is a central source of livelihood for many families in the project region. Animals provide food such as milk and meat and generate income for livestock keepers, processors, and traders. At the same time, poor hygiene along the value chain and limited access to veterinary services endanger the health of both humans and animals. Unsafe production, processing, and marketing practices facilitate the spread of diseases and zoonoses.

Objective

The project strengthens the livelihoods of 1,000 disadvantaged households that depend on livestock farming and animal products. It improves nutrition, health, and income and creates more stable long-term prospects.

Approach

VSF-Suisse strengthens the entire value chain surrounding animal products—from livestock farming to sales. Livestock farmers, processors, and traders receive training on animal health, hygiene, and safe production practices.

At the same time, we improve access to veterinary services such as vaccinations and treatments and work with local authorities to strengthen basic veterinary care. By establishing and strengthening local cooperatives, we create long-term structures that secure incomes and improve food security.
