Job creation and income generation for women and youth in Western Kenya

Project overview
Background
In Kenya, climate change, erratic rainfall, and limited agricultural resources are hampering local food production. In western Kenya in particular, low production levels, a lack of market access, and economic uncertainty mean that many families have limited opportunities for income and food security.
Women and young people are particularly affected by this, even though they play a central role in poultry farming and local food production.
Objective
The project strengthens the economic independence and income of women and youth through sustainable poultry farming. At the same time, it strengthens the local food system and promotes the rearing of local poultry breeds to reduce dependence on imports in a sustainable manner.
Approach
VSF-Suisse supports women and youth in sustainable poultry farming and strengthening the local market. Training in animal husbandry, marketing, entrepreneurship, and organization builds their technical and economic skills throughout the entire value chain.
The project follows a participatory and market-oriented approach and specifically promotes gender equality. This creates new income opportunities and builds more resilient communities in the face of climate-related crises.
