One Health in Action: the HEAL project

Project overview

Background

In the border regions of Ethiopia, Somalia, and Kenya, many nomadic and semi-sedentary communities have limited access to health and veterinary services. At the same time, the impacts of climate change, droughts, and health crises are increasing. The health of humans, animals, and the environment is closely intertwined.

Objective

HEAL strengthens the health and resilience of vulnerable communities through an integrated One Health approach. The project improves access to health services for people and animals and supports sustainable solutions for addressing climate change and crises.

Approach

VSF-Suisse is developing so-called One Health Units (OHUs) in collaboration with local authorities, communities, and partner organizations. These mobile or stationary units integrate health services for people, animals, and the environment and improve collaboration between government agencies, local service providers, and communities.

The project takes a participatory approach: communities are actively involved in planning, implementation, and further development. At the same time, multi-stakeholder platforms strengthen knowledge exchange, disaster preparedness, and women’s participation in decision-making processes.
