Healthy animals, safer food: how Project SAFE is strengthening food systems in Togo

In Togo, livestock are much more than a source of food. They provide income, nutrition and security for thousands of families. But when access to veterinary services is limited and hygiene standards are weak, both animal and human health are put at risk.

This is the challenge addressed by the SAFE Project, implemented by VSF-Suisse. By strengthening veterinary services and improving food safety along the entire animal-source food value chain, the project helps communities build healthier and more resilient livelihoods.

Bringing veterinary care closer to communities

For Dr Tambaté, who runs the La Barakat veterinary practice in Anié, animal health starts with being close to livestock keepers.

Working alongside Community Animal Health Workers (CAHWs), he provides vaccinations, treatments and advice to farmers across the municipality. Thanks to Project SAFE, his team can now reach more remote communities, bringing essential veterinary care closer to the people who depend on their animals every day.

Healthy animals mean safer food

Animal health is the first step towards food safety. When livestock receive timely vaccinations and treatment, diseases can be prevented before they spread. Healthier animals produce safer milk and higher-quality meat, reducing health risks for consumers while improving productivity for farmers.

Therefore, the SAFE project supports much more than veterinary care. It works across the entire value chain, training livestock keepers, milk processors and traders in good hygiene practices, safe food handling and animal health.
